The Flowers of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country known for its natural beauty. And this country’s magnificent beauty stems particularly from the numerous native flowers it houses on its lap. These flowers are flamboyant, attractive, and nice in fragrance. The colours range from red, pink, white, yellow, and purple. However, there are yet some odorless flowers. The most common Bangladeshi flowers are the Rose, the Water Lily, the Kamini, the Beli Flower, the Sunflower, the Marigiold, the Palash, the Shefali, the Sheuily, and the Krishnachura.

In the following segment I am going to familiarize you with a few of these flowers:

The Rose: I think almost every person is familiar with this flower. The rose is known as the queen of flowers. Its scientific name is Rosa spp. Roses come in many different colours, such as red, pink, yellow, white, orange, black, etc. Apart from its decorative usage, the rose is also used preparing perfume, medicine, food and drink.

The Water Lily: It is a very common flower in Bangladesh and it is also our national flower. Its scientific name is Nymphaeaceae. The Water Lilly is a hydrophytes plant bearing large flowers and floating leaves. They are grown in rivers, lakes, canals, and ponds. The Water Lilly plants are eaten as vegetables.

The Kamini: As the name suggests, the Kamini has a fascinating scent. In Bangladesh, a myth prevails that this flower can attract snakes. The Kamini is white in colour and its tree has small leaves. The scientific name of this flower is Murraya paniculata.

The Beli Flower: The Beli Flower is a white-coloured small flower with nice scent. Its scientific name is Jasminum sambac. This flower blooms at night and closed in the morning. The garlands made out of the Beli flower are used by women to decorate hair.

The Marigold:  It is also a very common flower in Bangladesh, which is known as Ganda Ful in Bangla. Its scientific name is Tagetes. It grows abundantly in Bangladesh. There are 56 classes of the Marigold. Some of its colours include yellow, orange, red, white, etc. It is extravagantly used in decorating in different functions.

The Sunflower: The Sunflower is yet another common flower in Bangladesh. Its scientific name of flower is Helianthus annuus. This flower is yellow and large in size. The Sunflower “whole seeds" are used in food, salad, bird's feed, etc. The Sunflower oil is used for cooking, which has a very low cholesterol level.

The Palash: The Palash is the most popular flower in the Indian subcontinent. Its scientific name is Betea frondosa. The Palash blooms during the spring season. The Palash tree is used as timber. Besides, it is also used to prepare resin, fodder, medicine and dye.
